We are costing out a move of Mincom's Ellipse from an MVS mainframe to a UNIX environment. The motivation for this move is cost savings. We are concerned about performance. We are a mining company with about 350 concurent Ellipse users. We want to know from someone at a company of similar size as us who has moved Ellipse from MVS to UNIX what the difference in performance is to the Ellipse end user after the move.

One of the more successful MVS to Unix migrations was at BHP Iron Ore in Perth. System and data was physically transferred from East Coast to West Coast of Australia as part of the conversion. There were no real performance differences between the platforms because the UNIX servers were over blown to cater for the same concern you are having. Even with overspeced servers the cost differences still stacked up well.
Reputations within IT were on the line with this migration!

I've just completed a migration from MVS to UNIX for about a 1200 user base so have lots of good info to share on this. One thing to keep in mind is to truly understand the difference in architectures for Ellipse between the two platforms. There are a lot of weird and wonderful features that MVS (and it's products) offer that Ellipse on UNIX does not and workarounds and enhancements are often needed. An example is batch scheduling, which are very different and some of the features in Ellipse UNIX batch are simply not there at all whereas they are feature rich on MVS.
