I have just installed Oracle 9i on a Solaris server which is currently running an Oracle 8i database. I will be adding an Oracle 9i database. I understand that the listener should be running at the highest level of Oracle installed.

Can anyone give me a quick overview of the steps required to upgrade my listener?

Thanks,

Jon

Easy:

1) Logon using 8i environment.

2) Copy 8i sqlnet.ora, listener.ora and tnsnames.ora from 8i $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin to 9i $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin.

3) Stop 8i listener.

4) Create the TNS_ADMIN environment variable in 8i environment, pointing to the 9i location.

5) Change working environment (ORACLE_HOME) to 9i.

6) Start 9i llistener.

In theory 9i listener should work with both 8i and 9i databases but in practice on Solaris there's a number of issues (probably bugs marked as resolved but actually not) thus we have to launch 2 listeners on different ports.
