I am thinking about getting a new mobo/cpu/ram for my windows box and giving what it currently has to my linux box. Basically what I want to do is to replace the mobo/cpu/ram. Would linux like this or would it have to be coaxed to work. The hardware that it would get is an amd k6-2 400 on a DFI mobo with a via chipset and a 128Mb of ram. Should I anticipate any problems doing this?

Any comments, suggestions or help is always appreciated.

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

There have been some issues with VIA chipsets, but I'm running a K6-III/400 with a VIA chipset. This is a replacement for the first mobo, which had problems with the L2 cache. Note that not all VIA mobo setups are equal. This one doesn't use all the VIA chips the first one did. The second board had some stability problems, but leaving it on 24 hours a day seems to have cured the problem ("cooked it in"). But then, again, it may not have been the motherboard. Oh, yes, I think the K6-2 uses a different VIA chipset, at least in part, from the K6-III.
Octalman

As far as my mobo goes, it claims to support the k6 III as well as the processor that I already have. As far as transfering linux over to the new mobo/cpu all I would have to do is simply pug the drive containing linux into the mobo and it should run?

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I "think" so. The kernel notes have some wisdom about the kernel code evading known problems with VIA (and other) mobo chipsets.

I installed Red Hat 5.2 and SuSE 6.2 directly from CDROM. No problem, though I had to give up on RH because they didn't have a working X driver for my graphics card, and SuSE did.
Octalman

Thanks for the info...

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com
