Whenever I move a set of files, from one place to another using windows explorer and just the mouse, there is always one file/directory that fails because it is in use. If I then try to move that file again, I get the same message. What I have to do is change focus to a completely different file, then back to the original file and then I can move it.

The same does not happen when I select all the files and then do a ctrl-x, open the target directory and ctrl-v.

I've monitored it using process explorer and I can't see anything obvious.

I have the same problem on W8 and W8.1. Any idea what it is in windows explorer that is keeping the file open?

Sorry if this sound pedantic and I don't know if I have an answer but;
> a set of files...
Any set of files or a specific set of files?

> just the mouse
Drag and drop? or right-click Cut in source folder then right-click Paste in dest folder?

>one file/directory ...
Source or destination?

>one file/directory
Always one out of many? Or a specific one?

Yes - any set of files

>> just the mouse
>Drag and drop? or right-click Cut in source folder then right-click Paste in dest folder?
Drag and drop. It works with right click paste (but not so easy with a touchpad)

>>one file/directory ...
>Source or destination?
source

>>one file/directory
>Always one out of many? Or a specific one?
Always one out of many

It is on W7SP1 with all updates applied. It is just an annoyance: I have a workaround. I'm not worried if there isn't a fix: I'd just like to know why it happens. I have previews turned off on explorer and I always use explorer in detailed view.

No luck(!) simulating that here on Win 7 Ultimate fully SP'd/ updated.

I'm staring at my mouse and wondering whether it might be a mouse problem. I use the same mouse on all 3 machines and it seems very sensitive to selecting files. Very often, if I select a bunch of files, when I try to drag on another window, it opens all the selected files.

I'll get a new mouse tomorrow and try that first.

Turn off thumbnail generation in group policies, because that is what is 'locking' the file and Windows Explorer is just too 'dumb' to work out that it is locking itself out of moving or deleting.

Scroll down to option four.

Chris.

Thanks Chris - that worked a treat.
