I have run out of room on my macbook, so have just bought an external drive.

I have 15 gb of video which I can move over to instantly free up space. This has a imovie project associated with it. Can I move everything over by copying pasting or is there a smarter way to do it ?

I also want to move over all my dmg and zip files, is this something I can use automator for , as the files are in various locations.

I notice, that if i use the view all image files in finder I have several copies of my photographs, which seems to be created by Iphoto, is there a way i can get this down ?

Also, I dont really know much about what sort of tempoary files macs like creating, so would like to know what i can and cant delete.

Also, any other tips appreciated for freeing up space welcome.

When you plug in the external drive it should mount on your desktop - just under the Macintosh HD. If it has not mounted, restart your machine to see it. If still not mounted, open Utilities/Disk Utility to mount the drive.

If you do not have OSX 10.5 with its auto backup, it's easiest to get a simple backup app like Super Duper and backup to the outboard drive.

If you just want to move files to the outboard drive, simply open it up and drag the files from your Mac HD to the outboard drive. They will be copied to the drive, not moved. Once that's done you can trash the files on the mac and empty the trash. Just remember that you should have 2 copies of everything in case either your mac breaks or the outboard drive breaks. Hard drives are the single most common computer thing to break.

Using OSX 10.3.9 & 10.4.11 on a G4, G5 & Intel Macbook
