I just started consulting for thsi company which is running very wierd domain and I have been given atask to move Exchange from an old box in old domain(NT4.0) to a new box on new domain(WIN2K). They are running two domains in our network. Domain A is windows NT4.0 domain with Exchange 5.5 in it and Domain B is windows 2000 Domain. There is no trust between two domains. They have created same user accounts in both the domains.Users logs into domain B and get their mail from exchange server which is a part of domain A since both domains have same user accounts with same passwords.
Now my task is to move Exchange 5.5 from Domain A to Domain B and restore all the original configuration like Domain A. I am not very good with Exchange anyways and this task is eating my brains out, so any HELP will be realy appreciated.

3073,

This is interesting. Even though the usernames and passwords are the same between the two domains, the domains are different. So, they'd log in as follows to the network and Exchange:

DOMAINB\joeuser

The Exchange server would be looking at THAT to log in and it'll only be able to understand DOMAINA\joeuser. If there's no trust between the two how could they log in? Unless it's prompting them for another username and password when Outlook pops up?

If this server is a member server I think you can move it into another domain and as long as you don't change the NAME of the server you should be OK (Exchange will stop functioning if you change the name of the server). If it's a domain controller then it's really tough.

Might wanna double-check the configuration and setup.

Good luck,
J

Honestly this is a pain to do. The most reliable way to do it is to export all the mailboxes on he old exchange server to pst files and then set up a new server in the Windows 2000 Domain with new mailboxes and import them. If you are not familiar with Exchange then this I promise will be the shortest route. Lots of backups too. I have done this a few times and most of automated ones fail in some way. this is also not a bad route if you are upgrading to Exchange 2000 as well. If you need to put the same server hardware into the new domain then you can do the same thing with a temporary leapfrog server. has some good suggestions on this.
