I have checked the BOL and Microsoft KBA's and have found a few helpful posts. However, I am wondering if anyone has any info on which SQL versions are compatible with higher SQL versions? We have information at 3 levels (6.5, 7.0 and 2000). The 6.5 info is burned onto CD's and needs to be restored to either a 7.0 or 2000 server. The 7.0 server we would like to move that data to 2000, and then use the 7.0 to restore the 6.5 data on to.

The only info I found about incompatibilty from Microsoft was the the model, msdb and master db backups created using 6.5 or 7.0 cannot be restored by 2000.

Anyone have experiences or cautions they could give me?

Suggested References for more info?

Thanks in advance,
Sunny

You can restore a v7 database to v2000 but v6.5 needs to be restored to v6.5 then upgraded.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Nigel,

Thanks so much for the reply. Have you tried this or had experience with it? Just wondering what the results are? Could you point me to some references or give examples of what happens? I have to give reasons to mngmt on why we should not try the restore to 2000 from 6.5.

THANKS!
Sunny
