Are moving backgrounds a good idea in a web site?

Generally, no - unless it's a game, where the scrolling background enhances the gameplay and atmosphere, for example.

No! Everything that loops, blinks, spins = bad taste, primitive, unsophisticated. There are other ways to enhance the artistic impact.

Do you include the blinking, sliding, fading dots / bars / squares in the background of the first 3 pages of your own website in that category?

How about a site that FORCES you to download the latest version of a plug-in before you can see anything? Isn't that inviting them to go elsewhere? This is about the site referenced in BRPS's post.

My comments were not personal. Your's are. I made a comment about a standard website that offers a porduct, services etc. My website is just a personal site and you're most welcome to go elsewere.

Absolutely correct about your website being a personal design. I didn't make the connection with any name when I clicked on the link, though, and my comments were about the website, not about you personally. E-commerce and other non-personal sites are different from personal ones.

However, if you set your site up with Flash so it doesn't handle the presentation on its own, I'd have to classify that as not particularly well done. Even a personal site should be written well, especially if you want to present yourself as a professional or even just knowledgeable about about a subject. Since your focus at Tek-Tips seems to be Flash design, the above web design methods should be a given.

But do you still stand by your statement that ALL blinking, looping, or spinning effects are in bad taste?

As I said - I can think of plenty of JavaScript games (Mario-style) that utilise a scrolling background to actually enhance the gameplay.

Well, Design Police should really come and get me for bad design practices on the first three (sic!) pages of my site and falsh design (a crime in itself) :)
I actually agree that my sliding menus are annoying and there are a lot of things I would do differently now. On the other hand, that was my first website and it has a different domain name. However, that does not change the fact that I thought your comments were a bit meanspirited. Perhps, I should have worded my comment better. But, hey luckily there are some especially professional and extremely knowledgeable professionals among us that can straighten out those who make less than perfect comments :)

wow! I have a moving background but the actually words are in a plain table. does that change anything. it's not a personal page.

Just ask yourself, "does the moving background add anything to my page... or is it just art for art's sake?" and, "will my moving background hinder people trying to read the content?"

Jazz88, IMO your use of the moving background is fine for the following reasons:

[ol]
[li]It's a site about a visual medium - it is an "art" site[/li]
[li]It's quite subtle and not particularly distracting[/li]
[/ol]

I think the comments made were referring to, and a result of, the fact that you implied "ALL" moving backgrounds "WHEREVER" they are used are bad.
