Moving Active Directory to New Server

Hello All,

I have just worked on a system where a Windows Active Directory domain controller died. There was no available backup with system state. Apparently, the server had RAID and the primary drive was damaged and mirrored the corruption to the other drives.

I transferred the FSMO rules to the secondary DC, which was enough to bring back up the Exchange server and enable domain authentication to work again.

My question is if there is anything else I need to do to remove the dead server from the Active Directory. It is impossible to do a dcpromo or anything like that, but my concern is long-term if it might still be embedded anywhere that might cause problems.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, you will need to remove the references to that server from AD and DNS.

Take a look at the script at the end of my FAQ faq96-4733. It will greatly simplify the removal of the machine from AD. You then just need to go into DNS and remove any references to the bad server.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have already followed the first six steps on your document.

I've noticed that step 7-10 and further refer to running commands on ServerBad. Ditto for Microsoft KB 216498.

i.e.

7. On ServerBad run DCPROMO /FORCEREMOVAL
8. ServerBad should now be in a workgroup.

I do not have ServerBad available as the hard drive is dead. Can I still follow this section while ignoring the parts that refer to ServerBad?

Thank you!

Yes you can. Essentially you can just run the script to remove serverbad from AD. Then clean up DNS.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I will let you know how it goes.

I also saw your scripts on thespiderparlor.com and am interested in some of them. I tried e-mailing you at the address from the site, but the message bounced.

For the ComputerInventory2TextFile.vbs, can you give me a sample of what the output would look like?

Also, can you develop some of these scripts into custom applications? If so, what do you charge?

Thank you!

Thanks for letting me know about the problem with the mail link sjkted, it has been resolved. Please contact me via that link so we are not going off topic for Tek-Tips.

I hope you find this post helpful.
