I want to move an ACT 2005 database that sits on a laptop to a server so I can setup remote databases that will synchronize to the main database. When I try to move the database to the server, it will not let me open it when it sits on the server, nor will it let me save it anywhere but on the local drive.

Do I need to install any software on the software before it will let me open it or save it to the server. I don't plan on using the ACT 2005 program to open the database on the server itself, only the 2 laptops that will synchronize with the database?

You need to have ACT 2005 installed on the server first, so that the ACT instance of MSSQL gets installed. Then after stopping the MSSQL service on the laptop and on the server. I copy the database and the .PAD file to the server esentially overwriting the Act database on the server. You also need to open and modify .PAD file on the server to reflect the actual location of the database on the server. Then restart the ACT instance of MSSQL on the server. Share the folder with the .pad file with the users. Then from the workstation start ACT and open the database on the server by finding the .pad file.
I'm not on site with my ACT installation but that is generally how I remember getting it to work,
