Hi guys,

we have two domains (both 2000), we want to retire one and the other one is new. there is one server that we want from the old domain as it holds our home areas and profiles and is also a DC and a GC. is there a way to make it a member of the new domain without having to Dcpromo it? if we dcpromo it will this cause any issues?
please help.

Thanks

Gilbert

Hi Gilbert, you will need to run DCPROMO to move it. All of your files will remain intact, however the profiles (linked to the domain) will become useless on you as new ones would be created when users login on the new domain.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Do full backups as your first step. Before you demote the server, you should move roles and services to the new servers and test.

There are 5 FSMO roles and the global catalog. You should make sure all 5 roles are located somewhere on the domain controllers that will remain and atleast one global catalog is also running on a DC that will remain. See help in windows about locating FSMO roles and moving them if you need instructions.

Move services like DHCP, WINS, and especially DNS (if all zones are active directory integrated, this is real easy to do) to your servers that will remain. These services are not required to be on domain controllers and can reside on member servers. Again, windows help is quite detailed on doing these tasks.

Before running DCPROMO, run another full backup, then shut down the old controller and test to make sure your network runs fine, replicates fine, you can add/edit accounts, send emails... etc.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA

As this is a server in a child domain that is being retired it shoudl not be necesary to move FSMO roles. It may however be necessary to use DCPROMO /FORCEDREMOVAL if you encounter problems with the demotion.

I hope you find this post helpful.
