Movie thumbnail

Is there a way for vb6 to show a thumbnail of a AVI or WMV movie without having a miniature windowsmediaplayer window?

I notice references to using GDI but can't find a VB6 example of how it is used for this or whether this will handle movies.

I notice GDI will thumnbnail the first frame of WMV but will it also handle AVI like Windows Explorer will?

Is it possible to use the same APIs as Windows Explorer?
