i have a 2 meg movie that i have broken up into small parts.
there are 6 parts of 250 to 500 k each. they load in order.
offline, the movie is smooth.
online...the movie is choppy in some parts.
how can i fix this? i don't want to break it down even further.
you can see the full movie at
please help. thanks.

I wouldn't of thought that the size of the movie would have slowed the playiong down, that's usually down to having too many tweens happening at the same time etc. Are you using a pre-loader...? funkymonk B-)

no i'm not using a preloader (partly because the movie is broken into pieces...so having the first piece preload is not going to help much)

i do have a lot of tweens but the stuttering part does not have tweens.

it is just a series of 7 graphics...all of a door opening.

If your movie pieces are between 250 & 500k each then you will need to use a pre-loader. I use one all the time even if it's a simple loader for small file sizes.

If the images are bit map's I usually find that they can make a movie stutter, not sure what to suggest for that. Try using a preloader and see if that helps.

Oh, and the link to your site seem's to be dead..... funkymonk B-)

hi.

the problem with the preloader is that i don't want the movie to pause...load and then play. with a preloader, there will be a pause (while it is preloading).

my movie is one continuous thing...i can't have any pauses.

so i don't think that i can use a preloader.

i don't know what to do.

The preloader idea is not that bad, and it could possibly help. As it is, on my cable connection, the movie (which one is it?) does jerk on the door opening, but hitting refresh when inside, will replay it relatively smothly...

Just checked it on my old 56k dial-up, and forget it... Took like 10 minutes to get to the 4th frame of the door opening!

What are these pictures anyway? Jpgs, gifs, bitmaps?
What size in KBs?
How many movies do you have in there?
Think you could join what I believe are the first two (including the door opening), and at least put a preloader on those. Worst case, you could allways only load 60 to 80%, before you start that movie playing, hoping it will stream more smootly while downloading the rest in the background.

Another thing you can look into, is limit the dimension of your movie(s). You are now scaling at 100%... I would try limiting it to like 600-700*400-500 at the most. That could also help.

Those alpha tweens can be murder on relatively slow processors! And if you are using bitmaps, change to gifs, pngs or jpgs, that would surely make a big difference.

well...the jerky part of the movie is the door opening.

it is a series of seven photos...gifs...200K each.

i'll try putting a preloader on this part.

Greetings all,
Suppose that a flash movie is of considerable size and I don't want to wait untill all of that gets downloaded in to the client before it starts playing. Say, a movie is of 500 kb. I want it to break in to 10 parts of 50 kb each, and once frist 50kb is downloaded, it should start playing, downloading the next 50kb simultaneously. Is there a way out? Please let me know,
Thanks,
-Aravind

That's not exactly how it works!

You would cut down on the downloading time of a big movie (500KB ain't that big!), by loading certain elements on demand only, not by breaking it up in severals movies that each load in turn. It will download the first 50kb, start playing the movie and will wait till the end of that movie to load the next part, thus stopping between every movie.

You can allways only load 60 to 80% of a big movie, before you start it playing while it continues downloading, but depending on the complexity and content, sometimes 80% still ain't enough preload, to allow the movie to stream while the rest of it downloads in the background.

Most every movie is different in that respect!
