I installed all the software (Windows XP etc...)on my hard drive with an MSI 6558 MOBO and a celeron 2.4GHZ cpu. I moved it to a dell dimension with a Pentium 2.0GHZ socket 478 CPU. When I start the PC it will not boot up. In fact it just keeps restarting. I can get it into the setup screen and it gives me the option of booting in safe mode, Prompt mode etc... but it doesn't matter which one I choose it just rstarts. Any suggetions...

It doesn't work that way. The OS checks for a whole bunch of things during bootup to make sure you haven't done what you did.

Will require a reload with the hardware you intend to use.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Chances are that your old motherboard supported a different HAL type (HAL = Hardware Extraction Layer) and the OS doesn't know how to handle the new hardware. You 'should' be able to fix it but it's likely to prove easier to reinstall from scratch again.

If you want to try and get it working you are going to have to load an XP cd up and start the repair that way. If I were you however I would just reinstall.

One bit of advice for you in the future, if you're going to swap an OS over to a new board you may want to investigate Sysprep and HAL types.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Thanks, I kinda of figured as much but I was hoping that there might be a simple solution.

My guess is that although both use intel CPU's the motherboard chipsets are from different manufacturers ie: SIS, Intel or VIA, SIS etc.
As the others have said.
Loaded and configured on one platform then doesn't recognise when asked to boot on another (understandable when you think about it)
Re-install on the platform intended.
