I currently have a cluster of 4 hp dl380 g5's with intel xeon processors. I was looking at ordering a new Dell with 4 Opteron Quad processors. I know i cannot vmotion between these hosts. But is there any issue with shuting the vm down on the intel server. Migrating it to the amd and booting it back up. I guess the guest os will see the processor change. Has anyone done this and had any issues.

I have a 6 node cluster. Back when it was only 4 servers of the same make, model and proccessors I added two updated HP servers with slighty different processors. I had to tweak the VM's, under settings, options, CPUID Mask under Advanced. You will also see there is a tab for specified configuration for AMD processors. I would either call or research VMWARE for a viable answer. It will depend on the exact processors you will be using and what specific AMD overides that may be necessary. I would take a clone of the VM in question and copy it over to the new server and see if you have any issues and go from there.

What you could do instead of migrating the servers is to just use the P2V tool and move them that way. I would think that would work. For sure if you used something like Platespin or StorageCraft you could V2V them.

Cheers
Rob
