Move SQL Databases from SQL 2008 Express to SQL 2008 Standard 1

We have our databases on SQL 2008 Express which we want to move to a different machine with SQL 2008 Standard. The databases are relatively small. After doing the necessary configuration, how much work is needed recreate the databases? Is it possible to restore Express backup into the Standard environment?

Yes. Since you are not changing the version, you could also detach and attach.

The biggest challenge you are likely to encounter is migrating the logins from one server to another. There is a microsoft knowledge base article that can help with this:


When looking at that page, pay particular attention to the version of SQL Server and only implement the scripts for the proper version. This bit me once or twice.
