Hello,

Recently i´ve bought a new Server and i want to Move my Domaincontroller on it.

When i try to Backup the old DC with SystemState and restore it to the new Server the Restore works fine but after a Restart the Machine has a BSOD Bluescreen.

I thought solve this Problem i could add my new Server to the Domain as second Domaincontroller. Everything gets replicatet to the new Server and after this i stop my old Domaincontroller and everythings fine.

Would this be a good solution?

Regards

That is the much prefered solution.

Setup the new machine as a DC with DNS on it.
Replicate the AD database to it.
Make the new machine a global catalog.
Run both machines for a few days.
Change all the workstations and servers to use the new servers IP for DNS.
Transfer the FIZMO roles to the new server.
Wait a day or two to make sure there are no last minute problems, then dcpromo out the old server and remove it as a domain controller.

If you can afford the space in the office you might want to think about keeping the old machine around as a domain controller so that you have redundancy.

Thanks for fast feedback.

I want to virtualize the new Server with vmware.
It should be like:

Setup a VmWare Windows2003 Server with name "Server2", make him a Domaincontroller. He replicates and everything with the old server and so on. So now i have to Domaincontrollers, named "Server1" + "Server2".

Now the Second Server "Server1" should also run in VmWare.
So i shutdown the physical Server "Server1", setup a new VmWare Windows2003 DC with the name of the old physical Machine "Server1".

Do i also need to move the Roles like FIZMO manually?
I thought if i have 2 DC, they both have the hole Active Directory so there´s no need for me to move something manually? mhm.

Thanks in advance

Yes you'll need to move the FIZMO roles.

Before you power down the old server you'll need to remove it from being a domain controller so that you can more easily setup the new machine as a domain controller under the old name.

FIZMO roles don't move by them selves, they have to be moved by hand.

I knew I was spelling it wrong. It's to early to spell acronims correctly (I'm in California, and up only because a server crashed).

Thanks.
So this is the only thing i have to do or is there anything else i have to take care of?

Sounds not that heavy.
