I'm replacing a DC that is also running DHCP, i have a new server that will be promoted and i need to move the DHCP over to this. We don't have many reservations so i'm not all that bothered about moving the DB unless it's straight forward, is it just a case of stopping the service on the current box and then installing it on the new one?

Both servers run Server 2003 R2.

Cheers.

Yeh i saw that thanks. I was also hoping someone might point out the pitfalls of not moving the Db, so just stopping it on the old server and installing it on the new and setting a scope. I haven't moved a production one before so just wondering if there are any issues to be aware of that aren't in the MS doc.

Cheers.

The issues you will likely see are conflicting addresses. If you stop the old DHCP server and start the new one it won't know of any valid client leases and will just start leasing them at the 1st address in the scope. If you have short leases and you have no staff in at the weekend you could easily do this over a weekend.
I have enabled the 'Microsoft Release DHCP Lease On Shutdown Option' on the DHCP Servers for Windows 2000+ clients so when PC's are rebooted or shutdown they release their IP address which makes this is a bit easier.

Use netsh to move dhcp on any 2000 and upwards servers. Takes less then a minute and works perfectly every time. You can either do it in a text style mode which allows you to clean up dhcp while you are at it or a raw sort of mode.

The database move is a legacy method from nt4 days and should be avoided unless your are migrating from a old server.
