Have set up new computer quite often by saving data on available media, then reinstalling software on new computer. In old DOS days, it was easy to use Laplink and a serial cable to move the whole thing from one to another. Have a new case, MB, CPU, etc. ordered to go with recent monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. Will still have complete computer that is being replaced, along with an extra monitor, keyboard, and etc. and it's still working fine, just a bit slow. It will go to a grandchild with no computer. Most of my computers evolve piece by piece over time so when one is retired, it's still viable.

My question is: Has anyone tried recently using Laplink's PC Mover or Alohabob's PC Relocator to move everything from old to new? It promises to move registry and settings intact, but I'm a bit skeptical. Claims to not overwrite any Op sys or software on new machine. We have a few things on this computer that are a pain to recreate and it seems something is always forgotten. Laplink's Mover comes with a USB cable. Both computers will have XP Home SP2.

Also, got a good buy on an external Lite-on (SOHW-1633SX)DL DVD burner that I'm anxious to try. Figured it would make more sense than putting new internal DVD burner in both mine and son's computer. I'll probably use it more, but he will use occasionally. The new computer is for him and has an internal combo drive. We both have external USB hard drive for backup and extra storage.

We do like our toys!

Temporarily hook up the "old" hard drive to the new computer as a "slave". Use the Win XP "Transfer Wizard" to copy everything over. Reset the drive as "master" and put it back into the old computer. Fast and easy!
