Ignore the random content of these videos, but do you know why this one:

http://www.folkofthewood.com/Media2/capitangaprakesridge.mov

has the download progress bar, and this one:

http://www.konicek.com/testquicktime.htm

has to wait for the whole video to load, then shows it.

I'm trying to create a display like the first link.

(The difference is that the first one loads a white frame and the grey menu bar right away, then shows the download progress through the "time slider." The second one just shows a white frame without the menu bar and waits until the whole video to load until the menu bar even shows up)

most likely, the difference is in the way these movies were encoded. quicktime allows a "progressive download" option when compressing which starts playing the movie while it is still downloading. that seems to have been the case with the first movie.
