I've seen this problem a few times now and cannot find any advise on the net with this problem.

In Excel 97, users often come acrss a problem where the left mouse buttom is permantly on, so it's highlighting cells where ever you move the mouse. There is no way to stop it when it happens and you have to close excel in task manager.. I've reformatted whole PC's to rid this problem and it don't help. It seems to be a bug in Excel 97, and we are on the last service release. Anyone else have this or know any solutions/advise?

Hope to hear from someone!

I've had this happen many times on W95 and W98 PC's but not with NT4. I think it has something to do with the mouse drivers, and of course Excel. Try toasting the mouse drivers and letting the PC reinstall them. Additional software or hardware may have been added that is causing some kind of now and then conflict. I haven't had this happen recently because I don't use W95/98 anymore.

When I saw this happening, the only solution I found to work was the same as yours - closing Excel.

Sorry this is not much help.

It is a known issue with Excel. The only thing you can do is End Task on Excel and reboot the PC.

This is happening at my company also, but strangely we had no complaints until we went to Office 2000. Also, it usually requires a full reboot. Just ending Excel does not seem to stop it.
