I have a lap top and the touch mouse is working. My wife prefers to use an externalmouse - Kensington Orbit Rollerball. This was plugged in via the mouse port (using an adaptor on the USB plug). This has worked well for a couple of years but yesterday it ceased to work and no other external mouse will work either.
When the lap top is switched on and it begins to start up the mouse responds (rollerball lights up) but as soon as it begins to boot up, the mouse ceases to respond.

Is this a hardware problem?

Thanks for your help.

Have you checked setup to see if a setting was changed somehow? You didn't list any specifics about the brand you have, so other than checking setup for external mouse/keyboard settings, you could always take the ps2 adapter off and plug the mouse into a usb port.

I have tried plugging direct into USB port.
No external mouse is responding, whereas previously they did.
