I'm switching Mouse, Keyboard and Video between two PCs using a 2-port Belkin E Series KVM switch. Interconnecting cables are 2m in length, and all works fine when using a bog standard PS/2 ball mouse. However, I'd much prefer to use a Logitech M-BJ69 optical mouse, but this does all sorts of strange jumps on just one PC, and goes absolutely bananas if I switch back to that same PC having been working on the other one. Umpteen windows open up one after the other in very quick succession at the slightest movement of the mouse, and all one can do is close down using the cursor keys, <Alt><F4> etc. I can get no reply out of Belkin. Has anyone else noticed similar problems when using an optical mouse with a Belkin switch?

I use a belkin kvm but it is the omni series. I run into a problem of it not picking my mouse up when i start the computer the first time. As for the window problem. Have you tried updating the driver while it is plugged into the KVM. and also you might look to see if there is a firmware upgrade on the switch.

Is the optical mouse USB or PS/2? I have run into a problem before when using an optical mouse with a PS/2 adapter occasionally with different pcs and switches.

have you also tried a different mouse...either non optical or optical. You might try to narrow it down to the mouse or to the actual switch has gone bad by switching out the mouse and seeing if it does the same thing.

Thanks for that JHALL01... The system works fine with a conventional ball mouse. However, as I said, I'd much prefer to use the optical mouse, but I understand these require more power than the ball mouse which is the cause of the problem. The Logitech optical mouse I've got is indeed a USB type with a PS/2 adaptor, and I'm informed that a Microsoft optical mouse might work, so I'll be trying one of those shortly.

Also check to see if the KVM switch has an optional power adapter. The additional power to the switch from an AC adapter might fix the problem but this i have not tested. My Belkin Omni-4 KVM has the optional AC adapter to buy but i have not bought it.

I don't have the Belkin power adaptor but I'm sure I can find one that will give 9vdc at 600mA...

I also notice in the user manual for this KVM switch that it states you can reset the mouse by simply unplugging it from the unit, then waiting 2-3 seconds before plugging it in again. This would be a complete no-no if the mouse was plugged directly into the motherboard PS/2 port when it was powered up. But do I take it the KVM unit buffers this sufficiently to avoid damage when the unit is running?

Unplugging the PS/2 port while the computer is running won't hurt anything. The only thing it does is disable the mouse and make you restart. So i would go ahead and disconnect the mouse and leave it for a while then plug it back in. Then if that doesn't work then you can try unplugging everything, boot up the computer as if you never had the KVM, then reconnect everything to the KVM and see if that works. Leave the KVM off of everythign for about a day and see if that does it also.

Basically you are rebooting your machine to a clean startup with no mouse problems. I have run into a problem with KVM switches over heating and causing video and mouse problems. So disconnecting the KVM allow no power to it so it cools and flushes its "memory".
