System is:
Abit BE6-II version 2
socket Celeron 700
160mb ram
Seagate Barracuda IV
Yami SCISI writer
Generic CDrom
Standard Ketboard and Mouse
On Windows XP Pro
Basically the mouse started playing up about two weeks ago! sometimes it would load on boot, sometimes it wouldn't
It has got progressively worse untill NOW! it won't load at all!
Tried 3 differant mice
Reinstalled windows XP
Tried to force the mouse driver in
Tried plug and play
No joy!! just boots with a frozen mouse pointer.
Please help! Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

If it's any consolation, a hard fault is a lot easier to deal with than an intermittent one...

You didn't say, but we'll assume the mice are all PS/2. Have you tried a serial mouse?

Try checking the mouse out at DOS level. I usually use a floppy disk with DOS v6.2, load a bog standard mouse driver like AMOUSE.COM, and then run CHECKIT which will allow input devices to be tested.

My initial thought would be a PS/2 port failure of some sort. Check the BIOS to see that it is definitely enabled, and also see that no other device is assigned IRQ12.

Yes PS2!
What you have said is almost impossible in Win XP pro NTFS file.
Carn't see anything in bios that would disable PS2 port??
And I have just stripped out the board to check for a brocken/Dry solder joint and re-soldered to make sure.
One first boot it worked and NOT thereafter!
Havn't got a serial mouse so couldn't try one!
Any more sujestions welcome. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

Hi Martin, what I meant to say was, boot the PC up on a floppy disk with DOS v6.??, rather than the hard disk! This way, you're checking the hardware (mouse) at a low level, i.e. before Windows gets its grubby paws on it! Also, if not done already, for sanity's sake check out one of those mice on another machine just to satisfy yourself all is well with it.

Good luck!

paparazi,

You might have a bad ps2 port. If so, to resolve, buy a USB mouse or a motherboard.

You could be right!!
Fitted a serial mouse with no problems, so i've used one of those converters Serial to PS2 so I can keep using my duel wheel mouse.
Still want to know why the PS2 port has gone bad?
Does anyone think a reformat and reinstall of XP would help? just a thought!
I may hold off till the next time I need to reformat and remind myself to try the PS2 mouse again! Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

There is no reason why formatting and/or reinstalling an operating system should make the slightest difference to a non-working PS/2 port!

If you've not already done so, you could try clearing CMOS and making sure the voltage completely decays. I.e. remove battery and leave for a several minutes/an hour before replacing and putting back required BIOS params.

As to why it happened, could be umpteen things... The favourite is usually removing and replacing the mouse from PS/2 socket whilst the mobo is powered up.
