On a Windows 98SE system, the mouse froze and now will not work. Upon reboot, error message is that there is no mouse detected; device manager shows a problem with the mouse: not detected or not working. Mouse still frozen when boot to Safe Mode. The problem occurred some hours after installing an Ethernet card, new LCD monitor and CD-RW drive- all of which work normally. I have tried reinstalling mouse drivers for both standard PS/2 and Intellimouse 4.01 with no success. Have switched the mouse and keyboard- keyboard works in the mouse port so it appears the port is OK; have tried the Intellimouse with PS/2 adapter and USB- still no luck. Finally, we have also reformatted the HD and reinstalled the OS clean- mouse still not detected. Any suggestions appreciated!

Sounds like the only thing you haven't tried is using another mouse. Maybe the one you have is dead.
