hi,

I am really new to linux suse. can you tell me how i can mount an external hard drive and format it in a linux filesystem so i can use it to store linux files?

Which version of SuSE are we talking about...

No i have not checked the wiki site ben and frankly i did not know of it :) i will have a look and thanks for the help. I think it is suse 9 but will need to check. thanks again.
 
Suse 9 is different than the following versions (10.x and 11.x), as some things may have changed...

you can always check your suse version by
more /etc/issue

here is a sample output
