mounting a fat32 partition to redhat

ok, i have mounted a fat32 partition to linux. i can see the contents of the drive, but when i try to open a file nothing at all happens. when i try to write to this partition, i get an error message: "input/output error". do i need to somehow set it to read/write? -Greg :-Q
