I just installed AIX 5.2 on an external disk on an rs6000 7044-270(hdisk3). AIX 5.1 is installed on one of three internal disks(hdisk0). I want to mount a logical volume from 5.1 (which is on the other two disks - hdisk1 hdisk2) within 5.2. The logical volume is mounted as a single partition in 5.1. As far as I can tell there is no mirroring here. How would I go about making the logical volume from 5.1 available to 5.2? There is data on the logical volume that I don't want to disturb during the attempt to make this work.

A few questions.

Is the Logical volume in a different vg or rootvg? If in a different vg, you can boot into 5.1 export the vg, boot off the external disk in 5.2 import the vg then mount the fs

or
if it's in rootvg,

Did you install AIX 5.2 on the external disk with the alt_disk_install command? If so you can "wake up" the old rootvg and mount the fs under 5.2 otherwise you're out of luck. You should create a new vg, then copy the lv and do the above.

The logical volume is in rootvg. I did not install AIX 5.2 with the alt_disk_install command. I just booted the box hit F1 and specified to install the OS on hdisk3. I can reinstall 5.2 with the alt_disk_install command if that is the only way to access the logical volume. No one has touched 5.2 yet. I am rather new to AIX (we are a Sun shop) and don't know how to use the command. Can you give me directions?
