when i attempt to connect to the internet using my motorola sm56 modem, i get an error: "disconnected from dial-up". In the line below that it says:
"Dial-up Networking was unable to complete the connection"
Beneath that is the message: "error 630"
and under that is a message explaining that the modem is not responding properly and suggesting that i use the "Windows98 Modem Troubleshooter" which i have....to no avail.

The device manager says the modem is working properly....it's in irq 10 ...com port 3..there are no conflicts reported...it is a BRAND NEW MODEM

Can anyone clue me in on what i might have missed...?

got the exact same problem on windows 2000....
if you use hyperterminal (or other dial-progs), it works for me, but not with a regular dialup connection
what's the difference??

I am also having the same problem. Did you guys already figure out how to solve this problem.

hi,

I have same problem in Win98 when i attempt to connect to the internet using my motorola sm56 modem, i get an error: "error 630"

However in my case the device manager (win98) can't detect modem.

But Red Het Linux says this when I probe for PCI devices

[root@localhost root]# lspci
00:09.0 Communication controller: Analog Devices SM56 PCI modem
Subsystem: Analog Devices SM56 PCI modem
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 9
Memory at 10000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [disabled]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

I also can't configure modem for dial up Internet access using PPP in Linux.

Any help would be much appreciated.

In the 10 months since i posted this query, i have not recieved any new info related to the problem with the SM56 modem, however i did recieve email from several other users of the Motorola SM56 Modem with similar problems. I have long since given up on that modem, and installed an old Texas Instruments ISA modem in that computer, which worked just fine... until last month when it died also. To connect to the internet, on that machine, I installed a wireless network, and just use the modem on my other computer.

Problem solved!!!!

I had problem in Win98 when i attempt to connect to the internet using my motorola sm56 modem, i get an error: "error 630"
Also I coudn't find SM56 modem in Windows driver
list when I try to add modem.
I lost all this info as I recently formated my
hard disk.

In my case the device manager (win98) can't detect modem.

SOLUTION
go to site

Download right Driver for your PC.
In my case I knew I had a PCI SM56 Speakerphone modem.

After download file, extract to some place on hard disk.

Now this is an upgrade, but I had no modem installed so
rather than dbl clicking sm56set.exe to install I selected
sm56unst.exe to uninstall a modem driver I didn't even have!
(I found this trick by trial and error, its odd I know)

This required a reboot and on start up my PC
somehow magically detected PCI modem and I pointed to
the hard disk for installation files .inf etc.

And now I use same modem for Internet connection
to send this mail from my home PC.

Hope this is of any help.
