motion guide on a mask layer?

Hi all,
I'm trying to kind of make a spot light effect, so that my circle in the mask layer moves around in a non-linear path. How do I make this shape in the mask layer move along the lines of a motion guide? I tried to add a motion guide to the mask layer, but it won't let me ... ?
