Hi there,

I have a G4 'Dual Processor'MDD 1GHz powermac which is faulty. (motherboard suspected) Is it possible to put in a replacement motherboard from a G4 'Single Processor' MDD 1Ghz. So ending up with my original dual procesor mounted on a motherboard that used to run a single processor. if that makes sense? Would this affect the performance?
Cheers

All the slots and connections would have to be direct match -at best. Performance would be effected downward, but I use a 1.25 single processor g4 for graphics with no problem.

You didn't say what the problem with the machine is. Sometimes doing something like replacing the PRAM battery or resetting PRAM can make a world of difference, especailly noted when you have startup problems.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

Hi jmgalvin,
thanks for your quick response.
I bought the G4 from ebay. Apparently the s/w freezes but the mouse carries on working. They removed the hard drive and so I have to buy the OS and HD.
When I checked the motherboard I noticed someone had attempted a repair. A small SMT cap was desoldered one end!! Which is bad new cause I thought it was going to be s/w or HD related.
I've seen another motherboard but it was used on a single processor. hence the original thread.
I plan to use the mac for Audio HD recording. I have an old Protools Mix plus system and the idea was to upgrade from a very old powermac 9600 to a G4 so I could make use of usb + firewire options
thanks again
Mark
