My motherboard died on my Windows 2000 server. The hard drive is still good.

I want to copy the data from the drive but cannot boot from the drive. What is the best way to get the data.

I've set it up as a slave drive on another computer running XP and I can read it. The problem is that I don't see the files that were shared on the server.

Is it that you do not see them? or that they are there but you cannot open them?

Taking ownership of files

BTW: If this is a server as you state, are you not performing backups?

I cannot see them. The last backup is older than it should have been.

You've got machine set so you can see hidden and system files? You've taken ownership as rvnguy suggested? So what do you then see? Are you looking for the right folders? (eg, they're actual folder names, not the share names you were using on the domain). Is the disk partitioned as a single partition or are there 2 or more partitions.

Have you tried using the search feature to find something you definitely know should be there?

I've looked for the actual folder names. The disk is only 1 partition. It is a small 3 gig drive. There is nothing showing up even with files I know to be there.

Does Window 2000 Server put the files into some type of encryption?

Are you certian that these files exist on this rather small drive?? Or possibly on a network share??

Absolutely. It's an old home PC I set up to store files and act as a print server. Any suggestions on how to boot us from this hard drive on antoher computer?

Couple of ideas.

1. If you have or can generate a bootable CD of Linux, Knoppix or other you should be able to access the drive.

2. You can remove the drive from this PC, rejumper it to be(most probably a master) a compatible drive to another PC install it as the boot drive(removing the current boot drive) & see what you can retrieve.
This won't work with XP & might not with server2000 but worth a shot.

Did You look at folder options and check off 'show hidden' files? as suggested by wolluf.....

You are not by chance looking for your data under the old share name? If so, share names do not always correspond with the folder name where the data is actually stored. Just a thought, and no offense meant if I am "stating the obvious".

If you do try to boot another machine with this drive (50% success rate in my experience), and it doesn't boot, running a repair reinstall (in that machine) will fix this in 99% of cases:-

At least you should then be able to see the share names, and the underlying folders they refer to.
