MOSS Navigation and Audiences

Our team is trying to configure the navigation in MOSS so that specific audiences can view links or have links hidden. In trying to setup the navigation links, we have noticed that the link navigation settings only appear to be working when Active Directory Groups are used as opposed to a SharePoint Security Group. Is this a bug in MOSS or is this a configuration issue with our current setup of MOSS?

Any ideas would be helpful. Ideally we would like to use SharePoint Security Groups because they will have more flexibility for our security model. We have noticed that the SharePoint Security Groups work at the page security level but not the navigation level.
