MOSS Email Settings Question

I'm wondering if anyone has had this same error when trying to use outgoing emails with sharepoint :

"The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator. "

Alerts are also not sent. Does anyone know what settings need to be enabled or configured for this to work? Thank you much.

Hi,

Have you made sure that you are allowed to use your smtp server (mailserver) as a relay? In many cases that is blocked by default. Also antivirus software can sometimes prevent you from port 25 on the server.

Do a quicktest and open a telnet session from your sharepoint server to your mail (smtp) server on port 25 and see if that works.
