MOSS 2007 - Access Document Library Via UNC

I've read various articles on the net about being able to access Document Library's within a Site via UNC path, however when I try to access by typing in the unc path e.g.
\\SERVERNAME\sites\home\precedents, I get an error saying network path not found.

I had a WSS3 test installation a few months ago where this feature worked without configuration.

Is there something I have forgotten to do?

Shouldn't SERVERNAME have the port number after it? For example SERVERNAME:80 (or whatever port your site's web application is using).

Sadly that doesn't work either.

it should work without a hitch, you can also go to the document library and then click on actions > open with windows explorer. That will give you the network path.

When using the "open with windows explorer" option, it opens it as a web folder via http. I'm pretty sure on my other WSS installation it allowed UNC access, its very strange thats for sure!
