More than one smtp e-mail address

I have a Primary SMTP address setup under the e-mail addresses tab in AD for a user. You can add another SMTP address. Will internet email addressed to the second address be delivered to the Exchange mailbox as well for the user? What is the purpose of an additional e-mail address here?

Usually people set SMTP address like this:

firstname.lastname@domain.com

Some user find it usefull to have 2 address and yes it will get to the user mailbox you can add a lot of alias for each user but i suggest just adding one specially if the person name is hard to spell to make it easier.
 
In order to accept delivery for a given domain, you must have a recipient policy for that domain. Let's say mycompany has registered the internet domains mycompany.com, mycompany.org, and mycomapany.net. All three have MX records in External DNS that point to the same Exchange server. The internal AD domain is corp.mycompany.com. The default recipient policy stamps each user with user@corp.mycompany.com. To recieve mail sent to user@mycompany.com, user@mycompany.net, or user@mycompany.org, you would also need address rules within the recipient policy to create the additional addresses. You would probably want to make user@mycompany.com primary if that is the address you want the real world to see.

Often times it is also useful for a user to have multiple smtp addresses in the same domain. One example would be to have both user@mydomain.com and position@mydomain.com. Other times, additional email addresses are added for the sake of convienence.

 
Yes, it will be delivered to the second address as well.

The purpose of a second address is usually being used for the roles being played by the employee specially if he's a "key-person" in the organization.

For example a certain employee who has this email address anton@companyname.com is the chairman of the company, since he is the chairman you may want to add another email address to him let say chairman@companyname.com to tell your clients that if you want to email our chairman then his email address would be chairman@companyname.com

Don't forget that there is a diverance between domainadresses and aliases. When you just want a second emailadres in the same domain you can add a new SMTP adres as an so called alias and change your default adres if you like. Just like the other message did told you. But if you want another email adres in another domain you'll have to do more than just making an SMTP adres of update a policy..

- Point the MX for the new domain to your mailserver (don't forget the portforward for port 25 in case of a firewall)
- Create an new connector in exchange for the domain
- Update your recipient policy
- Create a new SMTP adres for the new domain
