This is probably a really silly question but i need to ask it any way.

I am creating a backup AD server for disaster recovery purposes, can I set the backup AD to a global catalog or do i have to move this once the primary server goes down (god forbid).

Thanks
Peter

You can have more than one...just make sure you are aware of replication that takes place if you have GCs across a WAN

Does that create excessive traffic ? of something more sinister ?

Not excessive but enough to notice on a slow linked WAN

If the other GC is on the same LAN or you have a decent WAN connection there should be no problem

Both sites running 2Mb SDSL links, should be ok i would have thought. Do you think so ?

p.s. Thanks for your replies, its much appreciated

Yep that will be fine, you need a local GC really as if your link goes down it can cause problems.

Thanks for that link, i am trying to get my head round that now. We have a local GC the secondary one connected via the WAN is purely for fail over purposes.
