I am having a hard time getting into this Linux stuff. I installed Red Hat 7.3 and chose for graphical interface boot up.

What happens is that while booting up a whole bunch of data is scrolling over the screen and finally I get a black (dos alike) screen asking for username and password. When I am logged in (either as root or as a user) and type 'startx' at the command line a message, among others, appears like this:

Fatal server error: Addscreen/screeninit failed for driver 0

and:

fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on x server ":0.0" after 0 requestes (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

When booting up everything is ok except this one:
Bringing up interface eth0: determining IP information for eth0: FAILED

My questions are:

1. The way the system is booting up (text) is this correct or should it boot up with a GUI (which I selected during installation) and show a graphical interface when promting for username and password (which seems to be the case when looking in the Red Hat manuals!)?

2. What do the error messages mean after typing 'startx'?

I installed Red Hat twice yesterday, first I chose for "Server" installation, afterwards I chose for "Workstation" setup. I keep on having the same problems.

I looked on the Internet, especially for the error messages, found some stuff but nothing related to the problems I am having.

I hope anyone can lighten things up for me,

Thanks,
Ron

Through Xconfigurator I was able to get it started but no matter what resolution I choose, it always has a resolution of 320x320 and when I choose for 16 or 24 bit colors I get the same errors as mentioned in the first post.

The video card displayed after PCI Probe is not correct (I was able to select the correct Video card from the list during Red Hat installation!). I also get a fail on Clock Probe.

Anyone has an idea what is causing this?

Thanks,
Ron

switching video card solved it,
