I think (not that it matters) that telemarketing should be "Opt In" only.
I am *SO TIRED* of getting calls (illegal calls, I might add), on my unlisted business line (I have an 800 number that redirects to it), with "You're almost out of time to renew the warranty on your vehicle!" or the other night "We're calling to confirm your installation date and time on your satellite dish."
The pre-recorded ones are the worst... if you press any button during the speech, it hangs up on you. Poof. If you wait to hear what the "proper" choice is, and then talk to a person, and don't immediately cooperate, they hang up on you.
Example:
(Recording) "Don't panic! But you're nearly out of time to renew the warranty on your new vehicle. Bla bla bla press 1 to talk to a live person to extend your warranty now!"
(Me) 1
(Person) "Hi! What is the year and make of your vehicle?"
(Me) "I'd like to ask what company you work for."
(Click)
....
(person) "... year and make of your vehicle?"
(me) "Take me off you"(click)
Now, according to U.S. law, a business is not allowed to cold-call you unless there is a prior business relationship.
AND, a business is supposed to allow for clear instructions on how to "opt out".
Neither of which happen.
OR, businesses take a *REALLY* loose interpretation of "prior business relationship"... like "We've called them before", or "We sent them a flier". Hardly what one would consider a prior relationship.
It's upsetting, really...
Just my 2¢

Now, according to U.S. law, a business is not allowed to cold-call you unless there is a prior business relationship.
Isn't it only when you are on a national "Do not call" list?
It really helped to put all our numbers on the list. To those who still call (not many these days), I remind that we are on the list and they will have problems, and I just hang up on pre-recorded message and never, ever press anything.

Their "fore" missed me, therefore their four-iron hit me, which is not what I was there for. It was an unfairway to start my day.[/navy][/small]
A "prior business relationship" can be easily, and untentionally, established by answering survey questions.
As soon as I hear "... we're not selling anything, but we'd like 2 minutes of your time to answer a few survey questions" I ask them to put me on their "Do Not Call" list and if they call ag .... <click>
Because I voted, does that mean it is ok for telemarketers to call and smother me with political advertisements on candidates? I am getting 4 calls a day on my answering machine.
kskid, that does not sound very nice at all.
Heard a snippet on NPR yesterday (or perhaps two drives home ago) about the politic telemarketing being in full swing. At that point in time they were focusing on the people for McCain calling all sorts of voters that loosely fit a set of criteria. I guess you fall under a set of criteria for those calling you.
But still, four calls in one day is overboard.
I would consider a daily call overboard though.
Once in a season is more than enough.
