More fun for Sony

Moronic, but I don't quite catch the connection with the short story you cited. Both Sony's position reconsideration and the Kornbluth story are interesting though.

In a way the story could be an allegorical reference to Tek-Tips today... but I worry about our situation's "final solution" (or the disposition of its formulator).

As I recall society had degenerated to an overworked minority of professionals/artisans who propped up a television-besotted welfare state. A 20th century corpsicle was thawed and revivified and upon having a good look at the world and its woes came up with the idea of selling the populace at large on the idea that home sites were going cheap (or free) on Mars.

After decimating the population in this manner (rockets sent into the sun?) they determined the 20th century man simply had ideas too dangerous to be allowed loose on Earth. Thus he was herded into one of the last "Mars Express" rockets himself.

The movie "Robocop" stole one of this story's minor images, an annoying game show host who frequently exclaimed "I'll buy that for a dollar!

I wasn't looking at the end result of their (welcome) position change. I was looking at the sequence of events that got them there.

XCP has a security flaw. The initial removal fix did nothing to correct that. Full removal broke the CD drive. Now along comes MediaComm with another protection scheme that opens a hole and a removal tool that opens yet another hole. Add to that the idiot executive making comments about most customers nont knowing what a rootkit is so they shouldn't even care.

That sequence reminded me of the newscast in the story about the airliner that crashed into a lake because the pilot thought it would be fun to take a side trip to buzz some sheep on a hillside. That was followed up by the divers sent to recover bodies all drowning because their suits were full of little holes.

The music industry is one part of our society that strongly reminds me of the herd of idiots depicted in the story.

Ahh, I guess that's what I get for not having read the story since the mid 70s. :-(

It's been close to that long for me too, but it's one that's stuck with me over the years.
