Just read this in relation to Steve Irwin's death:

Australian Prime Minister Paul Howard praised Irwin as a "passionate environmentalist." Queensland Premier Peter Beattie offered to honor him with a state funeral -- an honor Irwin's family declined.

Guess ol' Dave doesn't know the the Prime Minister of Australia is John Howard, not Paul...

Maybe the President of the US isn't George Bush, but rather Buford...

Scott

(Dis)honouring the Prime Minister by misstating his name reminds me of the New York sportscaster that inadvertently dissed, on national television, our undefeated (that year) BYU head football coach, LaVell Edwards, when BYU clinched its one-and-only national NCAA collegiate football championship:
Idiot Sportscaster said:
Finally, BYU's head coach LaDell Anderson, will finally get the respect he deserves, now that they've won the national championship.
(LaDell Anderson was the name of BYU's head basketball coach that year, of a team that didn't even make it into the NCAA tournament that year.)

Dave,
That's a hoot... great blunder, shows the reporter really took their job seriously, and new what they were on about, eh?

It is amusing though that in Australia about 10 years ago, there was a survey done of Australian citizens, and more (and I believe it was by a HUGE margin, like 80%) could tell who the first President of the US was, but had no idea who the first Prime Minster of Australia was (it was Edmund Barton, to save others from GOOGLING for it...) :)

I always found that amusing.

Best Regards,
Scott

I heard an interview quite a few years ago of Charles Barkley, an NBA legend. He stated how proud he was to play basketball for the "City of Utah.

He was probably thinking of Paul Hogan. [wink]

The late sportscaster Buddy Diliberto once referred to Saints (now Eagles) wide receiver Donté Stallworth as "Donté Stallpepper" (confusing him with Minnesota QB Daunte Culpepper, now with Miami).

I'm not sure, but I think he also called center LeCharles Bentley "LeCharles Barkley" once.

I attended the RCA Tennis Tournament in Indianapolis last month, and saw a GREAT final match where James Blake beat Andy Roddick. After the match, Bud Collins made his way onto the court in his RCA pajama pants and polo shirt (a fashionista, he is not) to interview the players. He started right off by calling Andy Roddick, "James." Roddick quickly, and with a sternness in his voice, corrected him, while the crowd laughed. I don't think Bud knew what was going on.

And perhaps the highest-level blooper I ever witnessed was when President Jimmy Carter was addressing the Democratic National Convention and in a monumental Freudian cogslip, referred on international television to former U.S. Vice-President (and Democratic icon), Hubert Horatio Humphrey as "Hubert Horatio Hornblower"...It had to have been the most embarrassing moment in Carter's life.

Well, while I am amused by the slip-ups... let's be honest. When it comes to sports slips, espeically things like NBA where there are hundreds of players in any season, confusing some often difficult to pronounce names, it's bound to happen. But there is only ONE Prime Minister of Australia... This is just a plane case of reporter lasiness and not checking the facts. (anotherhiggins - I think you have it right though! :)
