More about the data mining profession?

I'm interested in the data mining profession. But what typical background a analyst in the data mining profession
requires? A lot of statistics knowledge necessary? How's the market outlook for data mininig?

Competent data miners will have some statistical background, yes, but many interesting data mining technologies have come out of other fields, such as computer science. There are many types of data mining (predictive modeling, clustering, text mining, association analysis, etc.). The important thing is to understand the particular real-world problem, identify which (if any) data mining techniques can be applied, and to use them appropriately.

The field is a promising one, depending on one's skills and location. I imagine that right now, a competent data miner couldn't throw his or her resume up in the air in Washington D.C. and have it hit the ground due to recent interest in the intelligence community (FBI, NSA, CIA).

I agree with Predictor to the sense of the most important is to be able to define the problem (create model) and then compare it to real-world, statistcs is a very good tool as well as Calculus and Geometry, and from all the available tools on the market today the most important and rare are Comom Sense and the hability of evaluate a paradigm. my companies entirew business is dependent on data mining, where would i find individuals that have background in extracting information from Lotus notes. We are working on a major project and are looking for a contract consultant to help. Would anyone out there know any sites where I might find individuals with lotus development experience.

It might help if you could explain a little bit more what you are trying to do. I take it that there is some information in a Lotus Notes system that you want out, but is there more to it than that?

I started to pick up an interest in data mining from this. It has moved substantially from the my college days.
