i am trying to input the hours worked by various resources spead out over a month.

eg: resource 1
start date: 01.08.06
end date: 31.08.06
hours worked: 7hours

it keeps modifying the dates (start and finish: 01.08.06) or the hours worked (184h) - can i do this, or is the program made in such a way to calculate only accurate timess and dates worked?

thanks

The answer is "Yes" ... you can do it the way you want and "Yes" Project is designed to calculate only accurate times.

We'll do this in two steps:
First: create the schedule
Second: record the actual work

Here's the first step and the questions to give me the information I need to do the second step.

First part: create the schedule.

1. Create the resource(s)
1a. View | Resources
1b. Enter all information about each resource

2. Set the display to create the task(s)
2a. View | Gantt
2b. Display the columns "Type" and "Effort Driven"

3. For each task:
3a. Start - leave blank It should come from the link from the predecessor task. If you *must* enter a specific date then do that.
3b. Duration - enter the number of working days (not the number of days of work) the task will take.
3c. Finish - this is calculated by Project based on Start and Duration.
3c. Work - enter the number of hours (or days) of work for the task. This can be "1h" for 1 hour or "1d" for 1 day.
3d. Type. The usual default (you can override this) is "Fixed Units".
3e. Effort Driven. If you see "Fixed Units" in the Type column then the usual default is "Yes".

4. Set the display to assign the resource(s).
4a. View | Gantt
4b. Window | Split
4c. In the bottom window display, RightMouseButton on a gray area and choose "Resource Work"

5. Assign a resource to each detail task. *NEVER* assign a resource to a summary task.
5a. In the top part of the display click on a task
5b. In the bottom part of the display click on a line in the "Resource Name" column
5c. Click on the "drop down" button on the right side of the cell and select a resource.
5d. Click on the "OK" button. This isn't absolutely necessary because going back to step 5a and clicking on the next task accomplishes the same thing.

For the next step (entering actual work) I need to know if the work that the person performed that month is:

1. Less than the original estimate and the task is incomplete.
2. Less than the original estimate and the task is complete.

3. Equal to the original estimate and the task is incomplete.
4. Equal to the original estimate and the task is complete.

5. Greater than the original estimate and the task is incomplete.
6. Greater than the original estimate and the task is complete.

hi PDQBach,

many thanks for your extensive replies to both questions - they helped a lot.
