Monotone PSD placement in Illustrator 9

I'm having trouble placing Photoshop6 monotone layerd files in Illustrator 9.0.2.
Can it be done? It gives me a cannot be placed...memory file.
We have "upped" the memory for Illustrator and it still isn't working.

Any suggestions?

or .EPS not .PSD file Greg

Saving as tiff is not an option for a monotone and Illustrator 9 is not EPS friendly. It would rather you place native PDF files. We solved the problem with some creative shadowing and vector art.

You can place .psd's fine in AI 9. Just make sure that 'Link' is checked when you place it. Also name the montone color the exact same name as the color in AI if you are planning spot separations.
