I work in a educational institution (18,000 users) and external network traffic noticeably slows as more people arrive in the morning - and then speeds up again as people leave.
This sort of thing is fairly obvious but this year the network congestion during the day has grown to unmanageable levels. For example browsers come up with dropped connections/ timeouts and navigating websites becomes an exercise in patience (and exsaperation.)
The problem is that if I report the network as a congestion two things will happen:
* The helpdesk will try and check the setting on my PC - even if I point out that everyone is running slowly.
* By the time someone gets back to me the network is running faster.
So - what I'd like to do is get my hands on some software that will monitor and record network response times over the day. Preferably I'd like software that runs on Windows and is free (or cheap as possible.) I can then look at placing this on a number of workstations to get an idea of how bad the problem is.
Part of my units role is to deliver material from external sites, so the network congestion is affecting us pretty badly.
Any suggestions, comments etc. appreciated.
Cheers
