wats up everyone. Im having a little-big problem with my monitor, or so i think its my monitor. While ago my monitor started blacking out (it would some in to the display and at the same time would be fading to black) after a min. the screen would turn back on the way i left. As days went by the monitor would do it more often and longer. I STARTED BANGING ON THE MONITOR, this would resolve the problem in the short term. When i turn down the resolution and refresh rate it would still do it, however very rarely. I thought it might have been my 4 yr, old 128 ti4600 video card, so i bought a 256 FX5500 card, but still no solution. Should i get a new monitor? Should i throw everything out the window? Any comments would be appreciated, thanks.

Im a new to Tek-tips and glad that i found heaven on cyberspace ! ;)

yes that is a monitor issue... I had one do the exact same thing..

Funny story, I got so pissed off at it that one day I set it on the floor when I couldn't get it come back on, and kicked it (pretty hard for a 12 year old), and it came back up and NEVER had any problems again.. lol.

It doesn't show some certain colors (like you go into paint and have the colors listed on the paint bar are black).

What does a different monitor do? How about a different video card? What if you use the problem monitor on a different PC?

What's next? Dave

["wats up everyone" - hard to understand, consider using a spell checker, thank you.]

He already said he bought a different video card with the same results.

However I have had this exact same issue in the past, personally. The only thing that can do what he is describing is the monitor.

Monitor.
You should be able to get the flyback transformer replaced for around $40. It might be worth it if it is a nice monitor.

Look in your local phone book, or there are internet sites; e.g.

Used to see this in T.V.'s all the time. It's called "blooming". It is due to High Voltage regulation circuitry. Could be focus voltage (5 - 10 kv), or actual High Voltage (15 - 25 kv). Next time it happens, turn down the brightness and see if the picture comes back at low brightness levels. If so, you don't want to try repairs (unless you are proficient at working around 25,000 volts, and have good life insurance)!

miker377, thanks for the info. Im going to try to turn down the brightness and see if that helps. The LCD monitor i ordered still hasn't come in yet, and i believe the brightness WAS to high on the CRT. If that was the problem, IM GANNA KICK MYSELF!
