I just recieved a call from a customer who reported the following to me:

"Computer froze, red green and blue flag says no signal. Warning came up saying you need to close the program, when he tried to “x out” it froze. Now when computer is booted up the monitor immediately displays a “No signal” message, which disappears, and the monitor power light flashes. I instructed her to check all monitor connections on back of the computer and the back of the monitor, which she said, were all connected fine."

Any ideas what is up so I can give her a call back and let her know how to fix this issue? any help is very very appreciated.

thanks,
Brent

Okay, my take on it is this:

They closed the window, THEN they had the problem with the no signal. The no signal is a message from the monitor saying that it is not getting a signal from the video card. You were correct in having them double-check the connections.

Is it possible that they reset their resolution (or whatever), causing the No Signal message from the monitor? If so, then they may be hitting the power button, in turn they go into sleep mode (instead of actually powering off), then when they hit the button again it just gives them the error again. Just in case, you might have them unplug the PC, plug it in, and then try to start up.

At this point
a) If they can see any text, etc, then look at setting the video settings back to default.
b) If they only get the No Signal message, then look at hardware issues (loose component, bad part, etc).

Also--by chance, did this message actually said something about "what a foolish thing you have done"? Mudskipper

Another thought--
They could have locked up (for whatever reason) and then hit the reset button.

If the reset button stuck in, then the computer would be in a constant state of resetting. As a result, they would have a No Signal message every time they start the computer. Mudskipper

Thanks for the help, it all made sense. Sadly, it wasn't stuck in "sleep mode" nor was the reset button stuck. Meaning that I have a customer who is uncomfortable opening a computer with a possible loose component.

One word:

BLAH!!!!!

thanks again
