i have an old gateway 2000 that i haven't touched in a while. i took it out and plugged everything in, it worked fine, i used it a while and then one day when i started having troubles with the cd drive<it would open the disc tray when it was running at full speed> i opened it up and took out the cd drive and reinstalled it. i started it up, and it worked fine, all the audio cues were fine but, i wasn't getting anything on the monitor. so i checked the connections, made sure the video card was in correctly, and made sure the monitor and video card work<i checked the monitor and video card on a seperate comp> but, i still got nothing.

if any of you have any ideas as to what it might be could you please post them, thank you.

Make sure all connections are secure, and all cards and RAM are fully seated.

If ok, then check if any of the MB capacitors are bulging, leaking, or ruptured.

If they look ok, then insert the RAM in different slots.

If no luck, then see if you get a display with a barebones setup, i.e., install just the power supply, MB, CPU, RAM, video card, monitor, and KB.
If so, then reconnect/reinsert each drive and card one at a time until the problem resurfaces. The last component added is the culprit.

If there's no display with a barebones setup, then swap out the PS, MB, CPU, and RAM to find the cause.

If your new video card is replacing a built-in video adapter on the MB, then make sure the adapter is disabled either in BIOS or with a MB jumper.

If you're replacing an existing video card with the 7000, then make sure the old video card is removed from Device Manager, and its drivers are uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs.

If those are ok, then make sure the video card is fully inserted, and Windows XP compatible drivers are installed for it.

If no luck, then see if the system starts in Safe mode.
If not, then see if the video card works in another system.
If not, then it may be defective.

If it starts in Safe mode, then open the 'Display Properties' utility, click Settings/Advanced/Adapter, select 'Adapter Default' in the 'Refresh Rate' box, click OK, restart the computer normally, open Display Properties/Settings, select a resolution, click OK at the warning, reopen 'Display Properties' if necessary, go back to Settings/Advanced/Adapter, and select a refresh rate that does not exceed the max ref. rate that your monitor can use with the selected resolution.(Check your monitor's or computer's manual for this info. If you do not have a manual with your monitor's specs and the monitor is new, then it should be able to use a 75 Hz RR with a 1024x768 resolution.
Also, if the monitor is DDC compliant, then you can enable the DDC option in the video card's software, and this will allow the video card to communicate with the monitor to determine the max RR that can be used for each resolution that's selected.)
