I have a Gateway Essentials computer with Windows XP, 7gb hard drive. This morning the monitor would not wake up. I shutdown and powered up again. The Windows XP screen comes up fine but at the point when the log on screen should appear I get a black screen with the mouse arrow. The arrow is mobile and I can bring up the monitor menu screen but am not able to select anything. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

your computer is not booting into windows all the way. try booting into safe mode.
