When I turn my girlfriends PC on then turn my LCD shortly afterwards a message appears. It can't seem to recognised the signal from the AGP. Sometimes it doesn't happen and works fine, but other times it requires the monitor to be turn off then on several times. On the rare occassion it just wont turn on at all, so I give up.

Can anyone help

Running XP Home, Logix 15" LCD , Nvidia Graphics Card (not sure which one, think its 64Mb)

Pull the video card, clean the contacts (carefully) with a pencil eraser, clean off the rubber particles, and put the card back in.

If a message appears, then the monitor displays something?
For one thing, there is a DDC channel on the video connector, which carries ID and capabilities information. This part of the circuitry is usually powered from the video connector, but it may not be the case in your system. If the BIOS or the OS uses the DDC feature and the monitor is not "on" when the PC powers up, it may not see the proper monitor information and initialize incorrectly.
